Patients often have questions about how to use transdermal patches.

Clarify when cutting a patch is okay. For example, tell patients not to cut a patch that has the drug in a reservoir, such as Androderm or NicoDerm CQ...this may lead to dose dumping. Also caution not to cut fentanyl patches...since exact dosing is critical.

On the other hand, explain it's okay to cut Lidoderm and some others that have the med evenly distributed in the adhesive layer.
